THE KING IS MY FRIEND

Read Proverbs 22:11. I am going to lift several words out of that verse–those being, "The king shall be his friend." This is speaking of an earthly king, but I feel led to apply it to my Heavenly King, the Lord Jesus Christ. I have no earthly king who is my friend, so I must look beyond this text to a Heavenly King–Jesus, the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords.

When it comes to earthly friends, there are three things to observe. First, the rich have their friends until their riches disappear ( Prov. 14:20, 19:4). Secondly, whisperers separate friends (Prov. 16:28; 17:9). Thirdly, friendliness makes friends (Prov. 18:24). What do we mean when we say the "King of Heaven " is our friend? What does that suggest?

I.                   IT SUGGESTS ATTACHMENT.

One who is a friend is attached to another person by affections of feeling or regard. How is God attached and fastened to us? It is through His marvelous love (Jn. 3:16; 18). God’s love looked beyond our sinfulness to see what we could become in the Lord Jesus Christ. His first coming, the laying down of His life for us, and His plan to come back for us manifests His commitment to His own.

II.                IT SUGGESTS ASSISTANCE.

One dictionary defines a friend as–"one who gives assistance." Jesus is my Friend because He has sent the Holy Ghost to help me spiritually, emotionally and physically (Jn. 14:16,17). The word "Comforter" in John 14 speaks of "One called along side to help or assist." Our Friend helps in trials & temptations.

III.             IT SUGGESTS ACCEPTANCE.

See Prov. 17:17. Christ our King, loves us at all times because He has accepted us who believe through the sacrifice of His Son. We should not backslide and stumble in our Christian walk, but if we do, the Lord still loves us with a love that is everlasting and eternal. Nothing can separate us from His great love. We are accepted by grace, through Christ’s blood the very moment we savingly believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.

IV.              IT SUGGESTS ASSOCIATION.

A friend can be defined as one who is in the same party, civic group, etc. Since we have become children of God through the new birth, we have become members of the same family–the household of faith. The family of God should be close to their spiritual family members, but most of all we should be close to the great God who has adopted us into His family (Gal. 4:5).
