Servants Of Jesus Christ

Colossians 3:24, "Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ."

In this verse, service and reward go hand in hand. We can rest assured that if we serve the Lord, we will receive reward from the Lord Jesus for the good deeds done while we were upon the earth. God is not unfair or unjust, so we can expect with assurance reward from He who sees and knows all about us and what we do for Him. A person may serve Satan, selfish desires, or a sinful world, or the Savior. I made my choice many years ago to follow the Savior and let Him lead through this present life. When the Bible says, "Ye serve the Lord Christ," it is saying to us that we are slaves or bond-servants to Jesus Christ. What does it mean to be a servant (doulos) of Jesus Christ.

I.                   IT SPEAKS OF A POSSESSION.

We are totally and completely owned by the Lord Jesus Christ, if we have been saved. If you study Paul's words in 1 Cor. 6:19, you will discover that we are not our own. In all reality God sought us, bought us, and has wrought for us. Since Christ purchased His people, we belong to Him through salvation.

II.                IT SPEAKS OF PURPOSE.

The slave lived for one main reason, that being, to serve his master. He felt he did not live for himself, but that he was bound to the will of the master (Romans 12:1). If we have the right spirit, we are not running around trying to magnify our own rights, but God's instead.

III.             IT SPEAKS OF PLANS.

Who has the right and authority to make plans for our life? It is God alone. The true "servant" of God is like the Master Himself, who prayed, "Not my will, but thine be done" (Luke 22:42). God will never be satisfied with anything less that complete surrender to His plans for us. Don't fight His plans, forsake His plans, or forget His plans. God has a plan for each of us.

IV.              IT SPEAKS OF PERSONAL RIGHTS.

The slave had no personal rights. I believe when James called himself a "servant of God and the Lord Jesus Christ," he underscores how Christ was the reason of his existence. Without his master, he would have no quality of life.

V.                 IT SPEAKS OF POSITION.

The most honorable thing in the world is to be God's servant. With it comes privileges and responsibilities.
