OUR ANCHOR HOLDS Hebrews 6:17 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to show unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: 18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: 19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; 20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
The hope = sure looking for good things promised--Hope has its degrees, as faith also.
And as He cannot lie; the destruction of the unbeliever, and the salvation of the believer, are alike certain. Here observe, those to whom God has given full security of happiness, have a title to the promises by inheritance.
THE CONSOLATIONS OF GOD ARE STRONG ENOUGH TO SUPPORT HIS PEOPLE UNDER THEIR HEAVIEST TRIALS. Here is a refuge for all sinners who flee to the mercy of God, through the redemption of Christ, according to the covenant of grace, laying aside all other confidences.
We are in this world as a ship at sea, tossed up and down, and in danger of being cast away. We need an anchor to keep us sure and steady.
Gospel Hope = Our Anchor In The Storms Of This World.
· It is sure and stedfast, or it could not keep us so.
· THE FREE GRACE OF GOD · The merits of God · The mediation of Christ · The powerful influences of his Spirit= the grounds of this hope, and so it is a stedfast hope.
Our Lord Jesus Christ = The Object And Ground Of The Believer's Hope.
Let us therefore set our affections on things above, and wait patiently for his appearance, when we shall certainly appear with him in glory.
OUR ANCHOR HOLDS
I. WHEN OUR SHIP IS RESTING IN THE HARBOR
Mark 6:31 And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. 32 And they departed into a desert place by ship privately.
II. WHEN OUR SHIP IS SAILING ON SMOOTH WATERS
Psalms 107:29 He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still. 30 Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.
III. WHEN OUR SHIP IS ROCKING ON STORMY SEAS
Psalms 89:9 Thou rulest the raging of the sea: when the waves thereof arise, thou stillest them.
IV. WHEN OUR SHIP IS SITTING BESIDE THE ICE BERG
A-Matthew 24:12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
V. WHEN OUR SHIP IS DRAGGING THE BOTTOM IN SHALLOW WATERS Isaiah 43:1 But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. 2 When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.
The Christian’s Anchor—The iron anchor of the seaman is cast downward into the deep of the sea; but the hope anchor of the Christian is thrown upward into the deep of heaven, and passing through the super celestial waters, finds its ground and fathoming there.
Christ the Anchor—A dying sailor once said, “I now take my cable, and fix it on my anchor, Jesus, and go through the storm.” The Anchor holds us stedfast no matter the conditions of this world. Are you Anchored in Jesus? |
