OLD PATHS WE NEED TO FOLLOW

Text: Jeremiah 6:16 Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein. 17 Also I set watchmen over you, saying, Hearken to the sound of the trumpet. But they said, We will not hearken.18 Therefore hear, ye nations, and know, O congregation, what is among them. 19 Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not hearkened unto my words, nor to my law, but rejected it.

Intro: A well beaten path in the woods…Taking a well-known road….Doing things the same way for year….

I.                   THE PATH OF GOD’S VOICE (16 a—“Thus saith the Lord)

A-John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and

they follow me: 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

B-Revelation 3:13, 22  He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

II.                THE PATH OF STEADFASTNESS (16 a—“Stand ye in the ways”)

A-STAND AGAINST SOME THINGS--Ephesians 6: 11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

B-STAND FOR SOME THINGS--Ephesians 6:14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: 18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

III.             THE PATH OF VISION  (16 a—“And see”)

A-Proverbs 29:18 Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.

B-Proverbs 14:12 and 16:25 both say There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

C-Proverbs 12:15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.

IV.              THE PATH OF PRAYER (16 b—“Ask for the old paths)

V.                 THE PATH OF OBEDIENCE (16 b—“And walk therein)

VI.              THE NARROW PATH (Matthew 7:13, 14)

A-Matthew 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

VII.           THE PATH OF SALVATION (John 14:6; Romans 3:23; Romans 6:23; Romans 10:9-10)

A-John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

B-Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

C-Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

D-Romans 10: 9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
